What Is Ammonium Heptamolybdate?

13-07-2025

As a typical molybdate, ammonium heptamolybdate is also called ammonium paramolybdate. It is a colorless to light green crystalline powder composed of transition metal molybdenum, non-metallic oxygen, hydrogen and nitrogen. It is an ammonium molybdate composed of ammonium ions and heptamolybdate ions. Its name can be divided into ammonium heptamolybdate or ammonium paramolybdate. Its chemical formula is (NH4)6Mo7O24, its molar mass is 1163.9g/mol, and its CAS registration number is 12027-67-7 or 12054-85-2 (tetrahydrate).

Physical and chemical properties:

Ammonium heptamolybdate is a colorless or light green crystalline powder with a melting point of 190°C and a density of 2.498 g/cm3. It is soluble in water, strong acid and strong alkali solutions, insoluble in ethanol and acetone, and has average thermal and chemical stability, that is, it is easy to decompose into ammonia and molybdenum trioxide (MoO3) under heating conditions (temperature rises to above 170°C); under strong acid conditions, ammonium heptamolybdate is easy to generate molybdic acid and ammonia; in addition, it can also undergo double decomposition reactions to generate other molybdates and ammonium salts.

Structure of ammonium heptamolybdate:

From the production method point of view, the production steps of ammonium heptamolybdate are: first, the roasted molybdenum concentrate is slurried with pure water, then heated and washed, and filtered; then the pH value of the filtrate is adjusted with dilute sulfuric acid, filtered, and then extracted and stripped to obtain molybdate paste; then ammonia water and diammonium hydrogen phosphate ammonia solution are added to the filter cake after the first filtration to obtain ammonia leached residue; then molybdate paste is added to the ammonia leached residue to obtain (NH4)6Mo7O24 solution, and finally cooled and crystallized, and filtered.

From the use point of view, ammonium heptamolybdate can be used to produce other molybdenum compounds such as molybdenum oxide and metallic molybdenum powder, and can also be used as pigments (substances that can dye objects), dehydrogenation catalysts, agricultural fertilizers, etc. At the same time, it is also used in geological exploration such as finding phosphate ore, petroleum and coking industry desulfurization.

We have a separate production workshop for the molybdenum acid series. Not only does the molybdenum acid series have a separate production workshop, but also high-purity molybdenum trioxide, water treatment, etc. have separate workshops. At the same time, our ammonium heptamolybdate adopts the world's leading continuous crystallization process to produce products with regular crystallization, full crystals, good fluidity, stable chemical indicators, etc. Customers with needs can contact us as soon as possible, and we can arrange priority delivery!
